So here we are at the first update of the playlist! This will also be a good time to say that in the past week, after putting my idea out there in a very non-restrictive manner, I have decided to be updating the playlist weekly for the whole of 2018! You can press play right away and then scroll down for the story.
You see, I figured I could use a 365-like project such as this again, similar to when I did my daily photography updates in 2015. I also don’t want this to be something that will bleed dry so that’s why I am making this commitment right now. I am also sticking to the 20 tracks format for now so while I’ve added 5 new songs to the playlist, I also removed 5 of them. I’m sorry if that means I removed one of your favorites. You can send me a message to tell you which one you’re missing if you are not sure what the name of the track or artist was.
Included in the playlist this week
This week I’ve added a mix of more Torontonian vibes by the likes of PARTYNEXTDOOR and Jimmy Prime (formerly known as Jimmy Johnson). Many of you might now PARTYNEXTDOOR, as he is the most well-known inclusion of this week being signed on OVO Sound, like PLAZA last week, while also sporting high-profile collaborations with Drake and writing credits on hits such as DJ Khaled’s Wild Thoughts.
Jimmy Prime is crediting with coming up with the term ‘The 6’ which was popularized by Drake soon after. I included a song from when he was still using his previous alias but he has since been continuing to create his signature atmospheric sound using a heavily autotuned voice.
Also included are Wade Hampton, who is a new R&B artist (his Spotify profile only has 3 singles on it) from Texas that I only discovered this week, and Hudson East, who is a London-based artist with a sound that’s very reminiscent of the Toronto artists already in the playlist. Finally, I added a song called ‘Catch You’ by Flavour N’abania who is a Nigerian singer whom I know not much about except that this song caught my ear when it passed by when I listened to the ‘Wizkid – Come Closer’ Spotify Radio. He also has 1.7M followers on his Instagram page so I’m guessing he is kind of a big deal in Afrika. Either way, that concludes the update for this week, so I’ll see you next week for Update number 2!
